Zoomies & Zzzs: What Your Pet’s Energy Levels Are Trying to Tell You

🐾 Paws and Pens Newsletter
Because sometimes it’s more than just “too much energy” or “they’re just tired.”

🐶 When Your Pet Runs Laps or Naps—There’s Always a Reason

Ever seen your dog explode into a wild, zigzag sprint around the house? Or maybe they’re curled up in a sunny spot, snoozing through the day like they’ve had a long week?

Zoomies & Zzzs — those extreme bursts of energy or long stretches of sleep — are more than quirky habits. They’re clues. Clues to your pet’s mental state, physical health, and daily needs.

Every pet is different, but sudden shifts in activity levels can signal boredom, stress, pain, or even joy. Let’s explore what these behaviors mean, and when to celebrate them — or be concerned.

💨 What Are Zoomies, Really?

Zoomies & Zzzs often go hand in hand. Zoomies — also called FRAPs (Frenetic Random Activity Periods) — are those joyful, erratic, high-speed bursts of energy your dog (or even your cat!) may have out of nowhere.

Zoomies are usually:

  • 💥 Normal and healthy energy releases

  • 🛁 Common after baths, crate time, or long naps

  • 😄 A fun way to burn tension, excess energy, or excitement

But frequent or intense zoomies could also mean:

  • 😴 Understimulation – your pet isn’t getting enough play, walks, or mental stimulation

  • 😬 Anxiety – pacing, repetitive zooming, or high-pitched barking can signal stress

  • 💭 Boredom – pets with limited enrichment may zoom just to cope

⚠️ If zoomies escalate into biting, nipping, or obsessive behavior, it’s time to adjust their routine — more play, more calm, more balance.

💤 What Do Zzzs Mean?

We love a good nap — and so do our pets. Adult dogs typically sleep 12–14 hours a day, while seniors often need even more.

But when sleep starts to replace everything else — like eating, playing, or showing interest in people — it could point to something more serious.

Excessive sleep may indicate:

  • ⚠️ Pain or discomfort (arthritis, injuries, dental pain)

  • 🧬 Thyroid imbalance (low thyroid = low energy)

  • 🥣 Nutritional gaps — poor-quality food = low vitality

  • 🏋️ Overexertion from too much play or heat exposure

  • 💔 Grief or depression — yes, pets mourn too

If your normally active pet seems unusually withdrawn or tired, trust your gut. A quick vet check or consult with a holistic expert can give you peace of mind.

🧠 Zoomies & Zzzs Are Both Messages

Your pet’s energy level is information.

Whether they’re zooming across the yard or barely lifting their head, their behavior speaks volumes about:

  • 🧠 Mental well-being

  • 🐕 Physical health

  • 🏡 Environmental stimulation

  • 🍗 Nutrition quality

Don’t ignore the message behind the zoomies — or the excessive naps. Both are forms of communication.

🔁 How to Keep a Healthy Balance

Here’s how to keep your pet from tipping too far into hyper-mode or low-energy slumps:

Rotate toys – new textures and shapes prevent boredom
Try puzzle feeders or snuffle mats – these enrich and tire the mind
Include daily training – even 10 minutes helps focus energy
Use calming aids – ask us about natural supplements
Feed high-quality food – real protein and omega fats support healthy energy
Create quiet, cozy nap zones – sleep should feel safe, not interrupted

🐾 Real Talk from the Grooming Van

We’ve met both extremes: the pup doing laps while we unload tools, and the one too tired to lift their chin.

Sometimes, zoomies mean joy. Sometimes, it’s stress. Sometimes, naps are restful. Sometimes, they’re protective.

That’s why at Paws and Pens, we meet every pet with curiosity and compassion. No assumptions. Just support.
